Transcendental Tea Room by whitehotphoenix Transcendental Tea Room by whitehotphoenix
South Lamar, Austin, Texas.

Believe it or not, this is one of my favourite photos.

I think there comes a time in some people's lives where they look around and survey the state they are in. They survey the people and the things that are going on around them and they decide that it should be decidedly different. They stand up and move completely away from what they were before.

That's how I feel with photography right now. I'm seeing the same patterns over and over again and it's so tiring. I long for a new dimension in expression and thought and I am constantly met by recycled ideas and cliched emotions.

We recently lost all of our photo data, around 500gb worth of time, effort, and creativity, to a massive hard drive crash. I spent hours pouring over what was left of the drive with forensic data tools only to be disappointed. However, this seems to be just one thing in a series of losses. I feel like the universe is preparing us for something big. Something drastic. I feel that parts of our lives have been systematically stripped away in 2011 in such a way that we are left with only the basics now, or what I think is the basics, but I am usually shown otherwise.

In any case, it's time for a new direction. White Hot Phoenix is now two years old. Plenty of time to start making marks on the world.

Such a great area! The vintage clothing place and the Alamo Draft House! But what deranged idiot thought of putting a parking garage next to The Broken Spoke?? Oh, the humanity!! Looking forward to seeing your candles! :)

Ow. That is just too sad. Awful. Having met you, I believe you will bounce back and be even more creative and productive than before. (Can you invest in a RAID system to do redundant back-ups?)

Can anyone tell me why I don't back-up more ?

Thanks man! I can't invest in a raid system right now but hopefully things will turn around soon. I'm also still interested in doing a show with you if you'd like. Perhaps we can collaborate on a set and show it instead of trying to coordinate a bunch of strangers/kids.

I meant to respond to your note sooner but life has been piling up lately, (and smelling strange, too. ..) Anyway, I am chuffed by you suggesting a collaboration. Other than sharing a model, and contributing shots for a slide show by another student at photo school-many moons ago- I’ve never "collaborated" with another photog. Did you have a creative project or subject in mind to work together on, or were you thinking of parallel efforts on a theme? I would certainly be interested to expand my artistic horizons by trying something new.

I wish I was in a position to think about mounting a show. . . My finances are precarious right now, and for the foreseeable future. For now all my showing will be deviant. . . but I just keep keepin on, y’know? I could win the Megamillions next week!

Self-reflection is a difficult thing and one that often comes at a price. Many times its harder than hoped for and certainly not a gentle experience. Losing that much data absoultely SUCKS and I feel for you regarding that loss (having had similar losses on a smaller scale, I can empathize a bit). You have granted me the pleasure of knowing you and of our generosity and support, which has helped tremendously. While I have only met one of you in person, from what I've seen the both of you are strong, resilient, and intelligent people and whatever has come along can be dealt with. And if there's anything I can try and help with as well, I'm happy to offer what I can.

Here's to making the marks!!

And email me if you need.
